Very heavy rain today. Rain started at about 11am then carried on TIL 4.30 this afternoon. Adults out first thing, stayed in for some of the rain then went out again. It’s quite humid but also swift chicks can alter their metabolism and survive several days cold and without food. Our chicks have been all well fed. Two clips one from each nest showing the chicks. They are growing fast now using their wings to move around.

Heavy rain over night and wet and windy this morning. Sun came out for a while this afternoon but still fairly cool. All swifts stayed in TIL almost lunch time. Not much action TIL this evening. With 2 swifts on the respective nests had a screaming party of 4 flying round the house. Two clips tonight of feeding in chimney then bedroom nest. First reasonable view of chick in chimney nest.

Wednesday 10th June

Cool, damp day and now early evening it’s raining hard. All 4 adult swifts on the nest. The chicks are growing fast. One in the bedroom nest is much smaller than the others but is very active and getting well fed. Like last night the 3 chicks on the bedroom nest, feeding time on the bedroom nest and the 2 chicks on the chimney nest.

Mostly overcast today, a brief short shower and better evening. Not much change in the nests. The chicks are visually growing. In the bedroom nest one clearly bigger and one much smaller. It’s not easy to see the chicks in the chimney nest as most of the time they are behind the stone. Two clips from the bedroom nest tonight. First showing 3 chicks, the second showing feeding time.

Sunday 7th June 2020

An interesting day. Yesterday was cold and windy. Today a little less windy, cold morning but warmed up with some sun this afternoon. Several times today both adults from both nests have been out at the same time. I think they were struggling to get enough food for the chicks. The attic space is quite warm so I think the adults felt getting food was most important. Three clips today. First clearly shows 3 chicks in the bedroom nest. Next feeding time in the bedroom nest and last showing 2 chicks in chimney nest.

Good news today. I was watching nest cams just after 1pm when both swifts left the chimney nest and saw some movement. The camera is not as well focussed as the other one but I am sure I saw at least 2 chicks moving about. You have to look carefully but I am sure there are 2. No views of bedroom nest chicks today.

Thursday 4th June

Had I not caught the clip I showed yesterday I would have no idea the a chick had hatched. I did get another clip yesterday showing the same chick. I am not sure but may have seen evidence of a chick in the other nest but didn’t catch it on film. The second clip from yesterday.

Very little to add. Outside most of this very hot sunny day. Hardly heard or seen any swifts. The cameras still showing exactly the same so will leave the clips for today. The next few days could see them hatching. A shame as the weather is turning cold overcast and maybe the first rain for 6 weeks. Will not be great weather for feeding chicks.
