Monday 31st May 2021

Another glorious day. Four swifts flying round the house this morning then they went out two at a time. They are spending more time around the house and less time away. I expect more food is available locally due to the weather. I did see the bedroom nest swifts struggling with a feather their preferred nesting material. No clips tonight as little new to show.

Another sunny swift day. Again all 4 swifts out all day returning between 6 and 7 pm. Still no obvious eggs and no brooding behaviour. From the Bristol swift blog it is possible that there have not been enough insects for them to be able to produce eggs yet. It seems that across the country egg laying has been delayed. There were 4 screaming round the house early this morning. Three short clips. The first two showing the empty nests and one showing the bedroom nest swifts moving around.

Have been very busy the last couple of days. Today in the garden with our 4 swifts screaming round the house several times today. Yet to see any eggs but they are not always in view from the cameras. Two clips today. One of the chimney nest swifts moving around in the attic space and a short on of the bedroom nest swifts bath taken at 9pm.

Thursday 27th May 2021

A real swift day. Calm, sunny most of the day and warmer. All four swifts were out before 8am. Around lunch time I had my first screaming swifts flying and screaming round the house. I am sure they were the four from our house. Impossible to photograph but I will keep trying. Only one clip. It’s not in focus but does show a parasitic common swift louse fly. They stay dormant in the nest all year waiting for the swifts return. It is not thought that they cause them any harm. Not seen them before in these two nests. Hard to see but a white small mark on the swifts back.

At long last a glorious sunny day. Still cool for the time of year. All four swifts out first thing only returning after 7pm. Three nice clips tonight.

Tuesday 25th May 2021

Yet again reasonable weather til 11am then heavy rain again. All four swifts out first thing then back for the rest of the day. Nothing new to show today. Better weather forecast for the weekend with warmer temperatures. More flies so better news for the swifts.

Sunday 23rd May 2021

Yet another day of heavy rain and strong winds. They were all out first thing but by 11am when the weather deteriorated they were all back. I wondered if one in the chimney nest stayed but was hard to see. It is getting near the time when eggs May arrive in that nest. I learned it’s usually about 10 days after they both return. Short clips from both nests. Very similar to previous ones.

Saturday 22nd May 2021

At long last a dry sunny day. I was out a lot of the day but while I was in I hoped to see some aerial displays but no. They went out about 9ish then returned as usual at about 5pm. Did get a short clip as I can move the cameras of one of the chimney nest swifts looking out before leaving.

Friday 21st May 2021

Gale force winds most of the day with heavy rain on and off. All four swifts spent most of the day on their respective nests. Tomorrow looks a little better but more heavy rain for Sunday. I have only had glimpses of the bedroom nest swifts leaving and returning to the nest. Can’t wait to see them flying round the house. A short clip from each nest. They have hardly moved all day.
