Mixed news today. Forgot to mention the garden had been a nursery for baby sparrows and starlings. As far as the swifts go two eggs in the bedroom nest but only one swift in the new attic nest both lest night and tonight up until 10pm. 2 clips showing single in attic nest, swifts moving about in chimney nest and photo of eggs in bedroom nest.

With a lot of uncomfortable crawling in the attic, some string and gorilla tape managed to move the new camera. It’s not level but that’s the best I can do. Moved a little of the straw by accident. A bit disappointed this evening as only one swift has as yet returned to the nest. At this stage they occasionally stay out the night. Maybe I only saw one in the nest last night. Rechecking yesterday’s videos I am fairly sure there were two but I could be wrong. First clip showing the one swift in the new attic nest. The second clip is from the bedroom nest. Is that an egg I can see. Looks a bit like it. Time will tell.

Another cold day. Swifts stayed in their nests until midday. This afternoon I moved the new camera to hopefully find the third nest. Then a long wait til around 5 pm when two swifts appeared in the new nest site. I will try to move the camera tomorrow to get it a bit closer. Unfortunately the main nest appears to be behind a redundant sparrow nest blocking the view. I don’t want to disturb it too much as it will protect the young swifts from falling out of the nest. Will look carefully tomorrow. 2 clips both showing an obvious swift but tail feathers from the other one can be seen behind the straw.

Tuesday 12th May

A bit warmer today and mainly sunny. All 4 swifts gone by 8.30 this morning only to return at 8pm this evening. I was in the garden all day and didn’t see or hear them all day. I will try to move the camera tomorrow all being well. A short clip from each nest this evening. Lots of preening.

A very cold day today. Northeasterly wind ant temperature 10 degrees lower than yesterday. All 4 swifts on camera stayed at home til mid afternoon. I was going to try and move the new camera but as the others had stayed in I decided to delay moving the camera not wanting to disturb the possible new pair so early in their residence. Same weather forecast for tomorrow as well so will probably wait a few days. It’s not going to be easy so putting it off for a couple of days is easy. No clips tonight as they would be exactly the same as yesterday.

Sunday 10th May 2020

Interesting day. Warm and sunny this morning then cold northerly wind this afternoon. Early morning all 4 swifts had gone. About 10 am I stood outside as there were 2 swifts flying together. I think from my observations and reading from Facebook swift group that this sometimes happens when the second swift arrives. Shortly after this I saw one, maybe two, swifts entering what I think will be a third nest. I have a new camera looking at the spot they practiced getting to last year, will add a clip of this, but they are now 3 meters further down the wall. Will try to move the camera tomorrow. It will not be an easy job. Short clip from each nest and an empty space from the new camera.

Saturday 9th May

Very little to write about today. All the swifts had left into a slightly hazy but warm day. I saw the bedroom nest swifts return at about 6 pm half an hour after the chimney nest swifts. I was in the garden all day and saw and heard no swifts all day. No clips today.

Friday 8th May 2020

A lovely swift day today. When I got up two were screaming round the house. At 10.30 this morning there were 5 flying quite high over the house with 2 of mine still on the nest so that’s seven locally already. I sat out this evening and saw the two fly into the bedroom nest then a new swift flew into a place in the attic I have not seen used before. It was about 3 meters from where I was hoping a new pair would nest after last years practice. This maybe where they will nest this year so have ordered a 20 metre Ethernet cable. I think I can get the camera to that spot if they decide to nest there. One clip tonight showing one swift in the bedroom nest sorting out the nest.

Tidying up the bedroom nest

Thursday 7th May 2020

No clips tonight as little has changed. For me though it was lovely, while gardening, to have 4 swifts screaming round the house. Only for a short time but lovely to hear them again. No signs of the two new swifts I am awaiting but from reports across the country they are arriving in mass now.

Wednesday 6th May 2020

Lovely sunny day today. All 4 swifts were off before 9.30 and back around 6pm. I did for the first time see 2 swifts flying high over the house this evening. I am sure they were from the nests with cameras. 2 clips one from each nest
